SCENE 1
OSCAR THE GROUCH is sitting at his newsstand when Luis, Maria, Gabi & Rosita pass by on their way to the park. Oscar tries to sell them a newspaper with fish in it or a magazine with chewed gum in it, but they are not interested. Rosita thinks OSCAR looks sad, & OSCAR says he is depressed cause if he doesn’t get more customers, he will have to close his newsstand. Rosita decides to forego the park to help Oscar, & everyone else decides to join her. Oscar is worried that soon they’ll have everybody on SESAME STREET helping him, which he doesn't want. The thought makes him even more depressed, so he decides to enjoy the feeling while it lasts.

To advertise OSCAR’s newsstand, Rosita & the GROUCHketeers hold promotion signs up, Maria brings buttons & Luis brings t-shirts. All of this promotional merchandise has a picture of OSCAR smiling, which was Rosita’s idea, but OSCAR doesn't like to smile. Customers begin flocking in, & commenting on OSCAR’s smiling face. OSCAR tells Rosita to get lost & take her smiley faces with her but Rosita won’t rest until OSCAR’s smiling face is all over SESAME STREET.

OSCAR worries that it's a song about his smiling face, but Bob has really tried to capture the GROUCHiness of the newsstand in the lyrics. OSCAR still thinks it's the yuckiest song he's ever heard, but customers singing the jingle flock in to buy newspapers with fish in them & candy wrappers. OSCAR tells Bob & Rosita to get lost, but to keep customers coming, they decide to keep singing.

After coming out from the back room w/ a circle & triangle frame, Grover finally frames it w/ a square, but destroys the original painting by splitting it over the bald man's head.

Business is booming, due to the buttons & t-shirts, Bob's jingle, & the frowny-face buttons that Maria, Luis, Gabi & Rosita have just brought for the GROUCHES, but OSCAR is still feelin sad, cause business is good, makin him feel happy, & GROUCHES hate bein happy! OSCAR tries to drive all of the customers away as Maria & BIG BIRD announce the sponsors.
